Information About Declawing Cat

It may be tempting to declaw your cat when he or she is scratching up your furniture. Before making that decision, consider some alternatives.

The first question is: Does your cat have a scratchin post? If the answer is no, that's a clear reason why your furniture is being destroyed. It is natural for cats to scratch and expecting them not to is unrealistic. So the best thing to do is provide a designated item or items for your cat to scratch on.

When cats scratch, they stretch their upper body and let muscles as well as the muscles in their paws.

They prefer something rough or "scratchable" such as sisal rope or carpet. Scratching posts or kitty trees are ideal, especially if they're tall and allow your cat to climb. If you have a scratching post

and your cat won't use it, try rubbing catnip into the rope or carpet to entice your cat to get near

it. Try dangling a toy around the post so your cat gets comfortable around the new item in the house.

When cats scratch, they also release a scent from the glands in their paws. Even if the cat is declawed, they will continue the scratching motion to leave their scent behind. If your cat has begun scratching furniture and you have now purchase a scratching post, clean the furniture to remove the cat's scent since cats like to return to items that their scent is on. The goal is to get the cat's scent on the scratching post, and not on the furniture. Usually once this occurs, the cat will begin using the post to scratch on instead of the furniture.

There is a fairly new item which is also available which you can use to cover the claws of your cat, reducing any damage that may be done when scratching.
